This certificate program is designed to provide English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction to enhance your existing knowledge, training, and job skills. Our certificate program can further your ability to communicate in English for employment and/or college opportunities in the United States.

Learn English by developing grammar, reading, writing, listening and speaking knowledge and skills. Computer-assisted learning reinforces your English language studies and software skills. You'll thrive in a classroom environment that is encouraging and welcoming.

All ESL classes are available online through our Technology Enhanced Classroom (TEC) format. With TEC, you can learn and practice your English skills online from the comfort of your home.

English As A Second Language (ESL) Details

Where Can You Take ESL?

Hodges offers online English classes for adults all across Southwest Florida. You can come to our Fort Myers campus from 8:30 a.m. - 1:20 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. - 9:50 p.m. Monday through Thursday. You can also attend classes in Lehigh Acres and Bonita Springs at our Goodwill sites from 4:00 p.m - 8:50 p.m.

Hodges also offers ESL online so you can take your classes no matter where you are!

*International students with F-1 visas must attend classes on the Fort Myers campus.

Who is our ESL course for?

  • Anyone who wants to speak English with more confidence in a professional setting.
  • Anyone who already has a knowledge of basic English.
  • Anyone who is at least 18 years old can register.

Three 16-Week Courses Per Level

  • Grammar (Levels 1-3)
  • Reading/Writing (Levels 1-3)
  • Listening/Speaking (Levels 1-3)

Requirements

  • Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED.
  • Applicants must have legal status to live and/or study in the United States for our in-person course.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Applicants must complete an ESL Applicant Qualification form, which is used to determine eligibility to enroll in the program.

Financial Aid is available for Levels 1-3 for students who qualify. Speak to an Admissions Coordinator to find out if you qualify for Financial Aid.

Intensive English Bridge

Intensive English Program Bridge

A 16-week, 12-credit college preparatory course is offered at the advanced level. This course is designed to provide English language instruction to advanced learners of English who are preparing for college or need to increase their knowledge of academic English for professional purposes.

Reading, Writing, and Grammar (Level 4)

Where Can You Take Intensive English?

Hodges offers the Intensive English Program Bridge course at the Fort Myers campus from 8:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Intensive English Admission Requirements:

  • Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED.
  • Applicants must have legal status to live and/or study in the United States.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Financial aid is available for students who qualify.
  • Contact Admissions for more information.

College Prep English Details

College Preparatory English

A noncredit college preparatory English course is also offered at the advanced level. This course is designed to provide English language instruction to advanced learners of English who are preparing for college or need to increase their knowledge of academic English for professional purposes.

Hodges offers the 16-week College Preparatory English course at the Fort Myers campus from 8:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

More About Dr. Leisha Cali, Director of ESL and Hodges Online Programs

Dr. Leisha Cali, Director of ESL, has been with Hodges University since 2004. Her combined experience of leading a large, dynamic ESL program with years of teaching resident and international students has informed her research and practice. Her goal is to deliver language content and learning strategies that help students meet their fluency goals for home, work, and college. Dr. Cali has also developed English Grammar Online (EGO), a course specifically for students who want to learn in an abbreviated form at their own pace.

She’s developed the Online English Grammar course specifically for those who may not be able to visit our campus in-person.
