• Hodges University's Fort Myers Campus
  • TOBACCO FREE POLICY

    Purpose

The policy of Hodges University is to provide its students, faculty, staff, lessees, and all employees, as well as guests and visitors to its campuses, a secure, safe and healthy environment in order to enhance the delivery of educational services and otherwise comply with the letter and spirit of its mission statement. To accomplish this goal, Hodges University recognizes the need to ensure an educational and working environment that is reasonably free from various health hazards.

    Policy

Hodges University is a tobacco-free campus. The use, promotion, distribution or sale of any form of tobacco is prohibited in all Hodges University facilities, on all properties owned or leased by the university, or in publications produced by the university, with no exception. This includes all indoor and outdoor areas and properties. This policy applies to all faculty, staff, students, vendors, lessees and visitors.

    Definitions

    • Tobacco: Any product made of or from tobacco including, but not limited to, cigarettes, cigars, cigarillos, pipes, bidis, hookahs, electronic cigarettes or vaporizers (Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems), and all smokeless tobacco products.
    • Smoking: Inhaling, exhaling, burning, carrying, or possessing a lighted or electronically powered tobacco product.
    • Tobacco Use: The personal use of any tobacco product whether intended to be lit or not, shall include smoking as defined above, as well as the use of an electronic cigarette or any other device intended to simulate smoking. This also applies to the use of smokeless tobacco, including snuff, chewing tobacco, snus, smokeless pouches, or any form of loose-leaf smokeless tobacco, as well as the use of unlit cigarettes, cigars, and pipe tobacco.

    Compliance

This policy’s effectiveness depends on the cooperation of all students, faculty, staff, vendors, lessees and visitors to comply with this policy, as well as encourage others to comply.  Anyone who is in violation (including students, faculty, staff, vendors, lessees and visitors) should be politely reminded of the policy and asked to comply by discarding the tobacco product.

    Violations

    • A student found to be in violation of this policy will be considered in violation of the student handbook and subject to its disciplinary procedures. Violators will be referred to the dean of students for disciplinary action.
    • An employee found to be in violation of this policy will be referred to their immediate supervisor and shall be subject to discipline in accordance with the Hodges University Administrative Policy Manual.
    • Lessees who are in violation should be reminded of the policy and asked to comply by discarding the tobacco product and may be in violation of their agreement.
    • Visitors, vendors, or other non-students and non-employees on University premises who are in violation should be reminded of the policy and asked to comply by discarding the tobacco product.

    Opportunities for Cessation

In support of this policy, Hodges University will promote and provide programs and services for students, faculty, and staff who wish to stop using tobacco products. Assistance to students, faculty, and staff to overcome addiction to tobacco products and information regarding cessation programs is available through Counseling Services for students and through Human Resources for faculty and staff.
