Hodges chosen to host IT camp for middle school-aged students

Hodges University News

Hodges University has been chosen to host Aspire IT Middle School Outreach, a new program to increase the pool of young women aspiring to careers in IT. Through the program, designed by the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT), Hodges University has been able to expose the participating students to Information Technology concepts and inviting them to explore this exciting field.

Girls from several Lee County middle schools are participating in the summer camp, held on the Fort Myers campus of Hodges University on Saturday mornings. “The only requirement was that the girls be enrolled in local middle schools and have an interest in technology as a possible career path,” said Tracy Lanham, Advisor for the Fisher School of Technology Society at Hodges.

“The camp is being funded through a grant from NCWIT.  We are focusing on utilizing game/app development software where the girls’ main objective will be to find local refuge centers for lost or unwanted pets.  In order to accomplish this, we will be using the different programming tools, application development, and game-based learning platforms to collaboratively design and develop this app. In the process, the girls are learning about technology and team building skills.”

In addition to the grant, the University received five Slate tablets from Intel to use with three Surface tablets donated from Microsoft for application development activities. Hodges is one of only 24 pilot sites across the country chosen to conduct the program.
