Hodges University to hold summer 2012 ESL graduation ceremonies

Hodges University News

Hodges University will hold its summer 2012 English as a Second Language (ESL) graduation ceremonies on August 17 for its Naples students, and on August 20 for Fort Myers campus students. Both events begin at 10am. Delivering the keynote address in Naples will be David Weston, CFO of Naples Lumber and Hodges graduate, and Veronica Culbertson, President and CEO of the Southwest Florida Hispanic Chamber of Commerce will speak to the Fort Myers class.

Though a majority of the students come from Spanish speaking countries, students from all over the world are represented in the graduating class. “We have nearly 400 students enrolled this term in our Fort Myers, Naples, and Immokalee programs,” said Leisha Klentzeris, Director of the ESL program at Hodges.  “About 75% of our students come from countries throughout Latin America, but we also have a large population from Brazil and Haiti, and most of them are residents of the United States.

“In addition, we have students from European countries like Switzerland, Albania, Italy, and Russia and students from Asian countries like Vietnam, Thailand, Korea, China, and Turkey. Most of these students are here on an international student visa.

“Many of our students experience the graduation ceremony as a cultural or academic rite of passage. We’re looking forward to our guest speakers giving testament to the values of adult education and cultural inclusion.”
