Hodges University to hold fall 2012 ESL graduation ceremonies
Hodges University will hold its fall 2012 English as a Second Language (ESL) graduation ceremonies on December 17 for its Fort Myers students, and on December 18 for Naples campus students. Both events begin at 10am. Delivering the keynote address in Fort Myers will be David Plazas, Engagement Editor for the News-Press Media Group; and Dr. Aysegul Timur, Program Chair for the Business/Public Administration programs at Hodges University will speak to the Naples class. Dr. Timur is also a graduate of the ESL Program at Hodges.
Though a majority of the students come from Spanish speaking countries, students from all over the world are represented in the graduating class. “We have nearly 400 students enrolled this term in our Fort Myers, Naples, and Immokalee programs,” said Leisha Klentzeris, Director of the ESL program at Hodges. “About 75% of our students come from countries throughout Latin America, but we also have a large population from Brazil and Haiti, and most of them are residents of the United States.
“In addition, we have students from European countries like Switzerland, Albania, Italy, and Russia and students from Asian countries like Vietnam, Thailand, Korea, China, and Turkey. Most of these students are here on an international student visa.
“Many of our students experience the graduation ceremony as a cultural or academic rite of passage. We’re looking forward to our guest speakers giving testament to the values of adult education and cultural inclusion.”
