Hodges University establishes School of Liberal Studies

Naples Campus

In an effort to enhance its ability to serve the career interests and educational aspirations of its students, Hodges University has established a School of Liberal Studies.  The School will house several programs, including the English as a Second Language Program, Digital Communication, general education courses and the University’s Quality Enhancement Program.

"It has become evident in recent years that liberal studies are ideally suited to equip students with the highly transferrable skills valued by employers," said Dr. Kim Spiezio, Hodges University Provost.  "These skills include critical thinking, effective communication, reading comprehension, problem solving, active listening, teamwork, interpersonal skills, and finance and business mathematics.

"In establishing a School of Liberal Studies, we will combine a liberal arts education with business and professional objectives, thus graduating even more students ready to make a significant contribution to the workforce of Southwest Florida."

Numerous studies have concluded that in the 21st century many individuals will have between six and ten jobs in their lifetime and that students grounded in the liberal arts are among those individuals best positioned to seize many career opportunities.

Dr. Elsa Rogers has been named Dean of the School.  She has been with Hodges since 1997.  Dr. Rogers received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of the West Indies in Trinidad, her Master’s from the University of Memphis, and her doctorate from the University of Louisiana-Lafayette.

Hodges University now has five schools of study, including the Johnson School of Business, the Fisher School of Technology, the Nichols School of Professional Studies, a School of Allied Health and the School of Liberal Studies.
