Hodges University Physical Therapist Assistant program receives full accreditation

Hodges University News

The Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) has granted specialized accreditation to the Physical Therapist Assistant program at Hodges University. CAPTE is an accrediting agency that is nationally recognized by the US Department of Education (USDE) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

Dr. Amy McBreen Babb, Program Chair for the program, says that a great deal of effort and hard work went into the accreditation process. “Full CAPTE accreditation is required for PTA graduates to be able to sit for the national licensing exam and treat patients,” she said.  “We have been working toward this for over two years and passed with flying colors.”

Accreditation is a process used in the United States to assure the quality of the education that students receive. It is a voluntary, non-governmental, peer-review process that occurs on a regular basis.

Government economists expect job growth for Physical Therapist Assistants to be much faster than the average for
all careers through 2018. In fact, it is among the twenty fastest-growing careers. The elderly population is particularly vulnerable to chronic and debilitating conditions that require therapeutic services. These patients often need additional assistance in their treatment, making the roles of Physical Therapist Assistants vital. Also, medical and technological developments permit an increased percentage of trauma victims and newborns with birth defects to survive, creating added demand for therapy and rehabilitative services.
