Hodges University Awarded Prestigious LEED ® Green Building Certification

Hodges University News

Hodges University announced today that it has been awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) certification at the Gold level for its newest academic building on the Fort Myers campus.

The LEED rating system, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) is the foremost program for buildings, homes and communities that are designed, constructed maintained and operated for improved environmental impact and human health performance.

Hodges University achieved Gold LEED certification for implementing practical and measurable strategies and solutions aimed at achieving high performance in: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.

The 48,000 square-foot building, referred to as “Building ‘U’” on campus, was opened exactly one year ago, and has allowed the institution to meet the growing demands of its students. “With the addition of new classrooms, staff offices, conference rooms and the Student Union, we’ve been able to provide much needed services for our students, staff and faculty,” said David Rice, Vice President of IT and Facilities Management at Hodges.

“Much of the credit belongs to Sheeley Architects and Gates Construction. They were able to deliver a world-class, highly-functional facility, one that our entire university family is proud of. This project represents our commitment to our common goal of building a healthy, sustainable future for our community.”

“Hodges University’s Gold LEED certification demonstrates tremendous green building leadership,” said Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO & Founding Chair, U.S. Green Building Council. “The urgency of USGBC’s mission has challenged the industry to move faster and reach further than ever before, and Hodges serves as a prime example with just how much we can accomplish.”

Building “U” was also recognized at the 2012 BIA Industry Awards where Sheeley Architects were honored with a Merit Award for Best Architectural Project in the category of schools for their design of the Hodges campus building. The Award recognizes and celebrates excellence in the residential and commercial building industries of the Southwestern region of Florida.
