Girls in Lee and Collier Counties to Participate in Aspire IT Camps

The field of technology is not just for boys anymore. Aspire IT Programming Technology Summer Camps are helping to inform and inspire girls in grades 5-12 to delve into the field of technology and its endless opportunities.

Hosted by Hodges University’s Fisher School of Technology, AspireIT is a summer camp devoted to teaching girls about coding, game and app development, digital design and robotics.

“The mission of the AspireIT camp is to encourage and engage our young ladies in grades 5-12 with technology resources and instruction to enable them to make informed decisions about their future careers, particularly technology careers, so as to increase their meaningful participation in technology fields,” said Tracey Lanham, program chair of computer information technology at Hodges University.

Alexa Brandstetter, who serves as the program leader for the camps, works closely with Lanham to establish the curriculum each year, making sure the girls are “equally challenged,” and learn the benefits of entering a STEM-oriented field. “It is discouraging to hear that 25 percent of the STEM field is made up of women. These camps are a great way to show these girls the opportunities that exist in technology and how applying for jobs in the field of STEM will do nothing but help them,” said Brandstetter.

The Lee County AspireIT camp will take place on July 14, July 15, July 21 and July 22 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the H Building room H219 on the Fort Myers campus, which is located at 4501 Colonial Boulevard, Fort Myers, FL 33966.

The Collier County AspireIT camp will take place on August 4, August 5, August 11 and August 12 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Stock Building room 135 on the Naples campus, which is located at 2647 Professional Way, Naples, FL 34119.

The cost to attend the camp is $20, which covers lunch for all four days, as well as various materials.
