A native of Jamaica, Jean Smart joined Hodges University’s ESL faculty in 2006. Her career in education began after she received her undergraduate degree and she began teaching high school French, Spanish and English in Jamaica. She went on teach English in France and ESL at the University of Miami, Miami-Dade College and Broward College.

Relocating to Southwest Florida, she served as the coordinating teacher for the Moms and Tots ESL program at the Literacy Council of Bonita Springs and worked with the English Café conversation program of the Lee County Public Libraries.

Her training in speech-language pathology allows her to help students adjust their articulation of problematic English sounds while improving their intonation and fluency.

Smart is a member of Sunshine State TESOL and Florida Literacy Coalition.

In her free time, she is active with her church youth activities and is a volunteer with the Salvation Army, Empty Bowls of Naples and Adventist Community Services of Cape Coral. She also enjoys music, the outdoors, reading, traveling and sports.
