Leisha Cali

Program Director and Associate Professor : English as a Second Language

Leisha Cali received her Bachelor and Master’s degrees in English Literature from SUNY Oswego and CUNY Lehman. Her method of teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) emphasizes structure and rhetoric. Her areas of expertise are grammar, reading, writing, and TOEFL.

Leisha began teaching ESL in 1991 in Greece. While there, Leisha studied mythology, ancient history, art history, and Modern Greek, in which she is fluent. Leisha also speaks Spanish and has studied Italian and Latin. In 1994, Leisha began teaching ESL as a core faculty member at SUNY, Westchester Community College, where she was actively involved in the development of curricula for advanced ESL courses in all integrated programs and writing workshop courses. She was also responsible for launching one of the first off-site campuses in Peekskill, New York and then another in Ossining, New York.

In 2004, Leisha began to direct the ESL program at Hodges University in Naples. She designed a curriculum which enabled students to develop English language skills for both practical and academic purposes. In 2005 and 2008, she was responsible for launching the ESL programs in Ft. Myers and Immokalee respectively. Since she began to head the ESL department, enrollment has increased from 8 students to 400 on all campuses. Leisha is presently pursuing her Ed.D. at Nova Southeastern University with concentrations in Higher Education Leadership and Organizational Leadership.

Leisha is well-traveled throughout Europe and South America. Her interests include history, art, and literature of all eras and genres; semantics and world languages; cultural folklore and customs; politics and equal rights, especially those that promote the advancement of women and the wellbeing of children.

Hodges University recognizes that the way to assist the integration of newcomers into an English speaking culture is by supporting Continuing Education. By offering a comprehensive English language program, Hodges is not only facilitating transformation in the lives of its students but also enhancing English literacy throughout Lee and Collier counties.
