International College Holds Fort Myers Campus Groundbreaking
Fort Myers Mayor Jim Humphrey, Ward 2 Councilwoman Veronica Shoemaker, and District 1 County Commissioner Bob Janes shared their support and enthusiasm with the more than 75 people who attended the International College Fort Myers campus groundbreaking Thursday morning.
"Congratulations on the commencement of construction of the new facility. We are excited to have International College become an integral part of our City,” said Fort Myers Mayor Jim Humphrey.
At the conclusion of his remarks, Mayor Humphrey presented International College President Terry McMahan with a Proclamation, adopted by the City of Fort Myers, proclaiming April 22 as "INTERNATIONAL COLLEGE DAY.”
International College has purchased approximately 16 acres of land to build a three-story, 60,000-square-foot building at the Colonial and Winkler site, which will contain an administrative and student center, classrooms, state-of-art computer labs, a comprehensive Information Resource Center, and community meeting space. The $14 million campus construction project is slated for completion in Spring 2005.
“International College has always been a dual-campus institution. Fort Myers students and alumni deserve their own permanent campus – a campus that compliments the tremendous educational investment they have made,” said International College President Terry McMahan. “This new campus pays tribute to the students and Alumni of International College.”
The College’s current Fort Myers campus, which opened in 1992 and whose lease ends in April 2005, is located at 8695 College Parkway in the Renaissance Center. Enrollment at the Fort Myers location has increased at such a rapid pace, the College has outgrown the building. Gates McVey Builders, Inc., Humphrey-Rosal Architects, and Davidson Engineering are sponsoring the groundbreaking ceremony and are involved with the construction project. Frank Helmerich, President of United Christian Giving, is the trustee of the property.
Naples-based International College is a nonprofit (501c3) institution accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to offer associate, bachelor and master degree programs, was founded in 1990.
