At a recent gathering of the Southwest Florida Speaker’s Assembly, International College business students were able to meet privately with honored guest Sandra Pianalto. Pianalto serves as the President and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland.
Ms. Pianalto was in the area to give a speech regarding monetary policy and the economy. Prior to the speech, she met with students from International College’s Kenneth Oscar Johnson School of Business. During their meeting, students received special insight into the inner workings of the Federal Reserve Board.
During her speech, Pianalto discussed how few Americans have the necessary skills for manufacturing jobs due to lack of education. She went on to draw a direct correlation between a nation’s education level and their economic expansion. “The consequences of an under-educated public are devastating,” said Pianalto. “As a result, we are seeing a larger gap between the poor and the wealthy. And this is not a situation that we can sustain indefinitely in a democratic society.”
Ms. Pianalto’s tenure with the Bank spans more than twenty years. Before joining the Bank, she was an economist at the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System and served on the staff of the Budget Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives.
