International College Confers Lehigh Acres Graduate During 15th Annual Commencement Ceremony
Lehigh Acres resident and International College graduate Wayne Elrod doesn’t include the phrase “taking it easy” in his vernacular.
The 30-year-old husband, father of four children (ranging in ages from 2 to 9), part-time Fort Myers Police Officer, Private Investigator, and full-time development company project manager, has earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Management.
When Elrod wasn’t busy shuttling his children to baseball, swimming, or soccer practices and games, working on term papers and homework, and balancing various jobs, he carved out time to serve on civic committees.
Lee County Commissioner John Albion appointed Elrod to the District 5 Seat of the Nuisance Abatement Board. Elrod also sits on the Lehigh Acres Citizens Committee, which is establishing a feasibility study for Lehigh Acres incorporation, serves on a committee that is devising a community plan for Lehigh Acres, and serves as a member of Rotary International.
Elrod enrolled at International College in January 2003, after friends encouraged him to attend.
“Wednesday was the only night when the kids didn’t have baseball or soccer practice,” he said. “So, International College’s flexibility in class scheduling worked out really well for me.”
Elrod pursued a bachelor’s degree and internship in order to become a full-time, professional private investigator. Looking back, Elrod can now joke about taking 15 credit hours last term and 19 credit hours during the Fall 2003 term.
“I’m amazed I was able to do everything and still find the time to be a good father, husband, and student,” Elrod said. Ever the challenge-taker, Elrod is enrolled in the Masters of Science in Management program this term. He hopes to complete his degree in one year.
Elrod admits he almost considered not walking for commencement. Then, he thought of his kids.
“I hope graduating will help my kids see me as a good role model. Hopefully, my accomplishments inspire them to continue their education.”
Nancey Wyant, International College Management Program Chair, is especially proud of Elrod’s achievements.
“Wayne has a lot of ambition, drive, and dedication to follow through on whatever he does,” Wyant said. “There is no doubt he will go far.”
