Starting in January, Naples-based International College will offer an accelerated bachelor’s degree program in management at Manatee Community College in Bradenton.
The accelerated program is designed for the working adult with course instruction at night. Students with a Manatee associate degree can earn up to 12 credits in a 15-week academic term while spending only four hours a week in the classroom. Students enrolling in International College’s program can finish bachelor’s requirements in as little time as one year to 18 months.
MCC graduates are eligible to enroll in International College courses at a reduced cost. Those completing International’s curriculum while studying on the Manatee campus receive an International College degree.
International’s management degree program at Manatee includes 24 credit hours of a core component and 12 credit hours with an emphasis designed for executive management.
In 1999, the Florida Legislature passed a law allowing two-year community colleges to partner with four-year schools to offer bachelor’s degrees.
"This agreement provides additional options for MCC students who wish to earn a bachelor’s degree, said John Rosen, Manatee Community College vice president of academic affairs. This is especially advantageous for associate in science technical degree recipients for whom the opportunity to transfer to a four-year school may not have previously been available."
Manatee will be the fourth community college offering bachelor’s programs from International. International College, a private, non-profit institution accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, currently offers bachelor degree programs at Pasco-Hernando Community College in New Port Richey and at Edison Community College campuses in Punta Gorda and Fort Myers.
"International College understands and is successful in addressing the needs of adult working students," said Jeannette Brock, International College executive vice president of academic affairs. "By bringing an accelerated bachelor’s degree program to community colleges it allows these students to continue their education in a familiar environment, thereby bypassing the need to rearrange work and/or family commitments. This model has worked well at Edison Community College and we hope to follow suit with similar success at Manatee."
International College, with an enrollment of 1,267 students and a main campus in Naples, was founded in 1990 and offers associate, bachelor’s and master’s degree programs among 13 fields of study. Class schedules and academic delivery methods are geared for the working adult. The average student age is 31. In addition to Naples and community college sites, International College degree programs are also offered at locations in Sarasota and Fort Myers.
