The 2009 RedSnook Catch and Release Charity Tournament with Roland Martin, with
proceeds supporting the Conservancy of Southwest Florida’s initiatives to protect local waterways, has announced plans to honor two Hodges University veteran students. The International Game Fish Association certified tournament will be held October 2 through 4. On the evening p
rior to the tournament, the two students will be honored at a private “Stars & Stripes” reception. Christopher Skory, former U.S. Marine who served in Iraq, and Bruce Botts, formerly with the National Guard who served in Afghanistan, will attend an invitation-only reception as well as participate in the tournament.
“This is the second year that the Conservancy has reached out to those who have given us the freedom to have such an enjoyable event,” said tournament chair Tom Wagor. “We knew that Hodges University was very involved in helping local veterans with their educational goals, so we teamed up with them to invite two veteran students from Hodges to join us in the tournament. We’re all so grateful for everything our Armed Forces do for our country, and we plan to extend the invitation to them again next year”
Hodges University prides itself on being veteran-friendly. “We’ve seen a fifty percent increase in the number of veteran students who have enrolled with Hodges this fall,” said Dr. Lou Traina, vice president of University Advancement at Hodges. “Education is the tool that will help these heroes provide for their families and serve our community in countless ways, and they are finding that education at Hodges. We applaud the Conservancy for honoring these heroes,” he said.
Roland Martin, legendary angler and television host of the "Fishing with Roland Martin Show," is the honorary chair for the three-day tournament, a benefit to raise funds for the Conservancy of Southwest Florida water quality programs. The kick-off party and auction is Friday, October 2 at the La Playa beach and Golf Resort in Naples.
