Hodges alumna named Fire Inspector of the Year

Shar Hingson, who graduated in 2005 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Management degree, has been named Florida Fire Inspector of the Year by the Florida Fire Marshal's and Inspectors Association.  The award honors a fire inspector for individual achievement through enforcement of fire and life safety codes, proactive inspection programs and other innovative efforts that reduce the threat of fire in their communities. Shar Hingson has been with the Iona McGregor Fire District since 1999.

Jeff Atwater, CFO for the State of Florida, presented Hingson a resolution signed by Governor Rick Scott and members of the Cabinet at a recent Fire Service Awards ceremony.  Hingson and other honorees were also recognized jointly at a Cabinet meeting at the state Capitol.

“This award is a result of the skills I have learned and applied by attending Hodges University,” said Hingson. “The knowledge, confidence, team building, critical thinking and listening abilities are just a few of the skills I have learned, and continue to cultivate, while attending Hodges. Thank you for the opportunity to demonstrate what education, persistence, perseverance and quality instruction can do.

“I especially want to thank Dr. Nancey Wyant. Not only is she an excellent professor but an amazing mentor who continually pushes her students past their comfort boundaries to achieve success with confidence.”

Her career in public safety began with Lee Control (Lee County ambulance and fire dispatch) during the 80’s. She began her career as a fire inspector at Pine Island Fire District and made the move to Iona McGregor. She holds State certificates as a Fire Investigator, Fire Inspector, and Fire Instructor III. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management, and is actively pursuing her Fire Officer certification. In 2006, Inspector Hingson became a certified firefighter. She holds the title of being the first grandmother to graduate from the facility. Inspector Hingson is married with two children and two grandchildren. She is currently enrolled at Hodges pursuing her Master’s degree in Management.
