20 NAACP Youth Program Participants to Receive Scholarships
After successfully completing the 9-week NAACP Summer Youth Program at International College’s North Naples campus, 20 students ranging in ages from 12 to 18 will be rewarded at a ceremony 3 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 8, at the College.
During the ceremony, International College officials will award the summer program graduates with a certificate of completion and a CHANCE Scholarship. The scholarship will give the participants the opportunity to attend International College on a full tuition scholarship for an associate degree program.
“It is the hope of International College that the students who participated in the program have increased their desire to attend college upon successfully graduating from high school,” said Jeanette Brock, J.D., Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs.
A long-term goal of the summer youth program was to inspire students to attend college upon graduation from high school. Shorter-term goals were to help students strengthen skills in reading, writing and math as well as attain new skills in computer applications and improve their self-image.
The workshop, held at no cost to the students, was held three hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays over the 9-week period and was voluntarily taught by International College faculty. Workshops covered various subjects each week, including math, writing, computer and life skills. Participating students reside in Golden Gate, River Park and Immokalee.
LaVerne Franklin, President of NAACP of Collier County, is sorry to see the summer program end.
“This has been a great opportunity for these kids, many of whom wouldn’t otherwise have gone to college. The whole program has been a Godsend. It showed these kids that if they dedicate themselves and are committed, there’s hope at the end of the rainbow,” Franklin said. “We can’t thank International College enough for recognizing the potential in our kids.” IF YOU GO:
