Hodges University to offer Master’s in Health Services Administration

Hodges University announced today that it will begin offering a Master of Science degree in Health Services Administration (MHSA) beginning this fall.  The program is designed to provide graduate level education to individuals who are capable of assuming leadership positions in a variety of health services organizations. The MHSA at Hodges will complement the Associate and Bachelor’s degree programs already being offered at the institution.

“The United States is placing a high priority on building up the nation's health workforce,” said Dr. Carlene Harrison, Dean of the School of Allied Health at Hodges. “Healthcare institutions large and small require competent, capable administrative professionals to keep costs down and make sure that the standard of healthcare service provided meets the industry’s high expectations.”

Careers for graduates with the MHSA degree can be found at hospitals, community health centers, government, group practices, health maintenance organizations, home health agencies, long-term care and mental health organizations.

The degree is also designed for experienced healthcare managers seeking to further develop their administrative knowledge, skills and abilities to enhance their contributions to the healthcare industry.

As the U.S. population continues to age and national health expenditures continue to increase, the demand for qualified healthcare administrators has become more pressing.  In 2012, Forbes magazine ranked the MHSA degree as one of the top ten best degrees for jobs in the country. The ranking looked at the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ employment projection data to see how fast employment was expected to increase between 2010 and 2020 in popular jobs held by people with each degree surveyed.

The Bureau’s Occupational Outlook Handbook states that employment of health services administrators is expected to increase 23 percent, much faster than the average for all occupations, and with a mid-career median pay of $88,580.
