Golden Gate's Vasquez Named Student of the Month

Jennifer Vasquez, a Golden Gate resident and sophomore criminal justice major at International College in North Naples, is the college’s student of the month for October 2001.

Vasquez, 27, currently helps manage her family’s business, V & I Drywall, Inc., Naples. She and her husband, Virgil, have a son, DeJuan, 6, and daughter, Savanna, 4. The family has lived in Golden Gate for six years.

She enrolled at International College in 2000 and has been named to the college’s dean’s list for two academic terms there. Dean’s list students have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Vasquez, originally from Pennsylvania, would eventually like to work in the criminal justice field counseling juveniles and working on programs to help curb teen violence.

"I am looking for a career that helps people and can make difference in society," she said. "I think working with youths would be a rewarding career. If you help one person, you’ve done something worthwhile."

She was nominated for the award by Scott Kemp, Ph.D., International College professor of English..

"Her dedication to academic self-improvement comes across in a very strong work ethic," Kemp said. "She is always striving to improve. Her positive attitude is infectious and rubs off on her peers and instructors. She is busy raising her family and running a business and works very hard to achieve excellence in her college studies. She’s an exemplary student."

When she enrolled at International College at the age of 26, it was her first time attending college. "I like International College because it is oriented to the older student," said Vasquez. "The classes are smaller and you are able to get individual attention from your instructors. That means a lot for someone who had been out of the classroom for as long as I had been."
