July 10 2001 FORT MYERS' ROACH NAMED STUDENT OF THE MONTH
Tamara Roach, a Fort Myers resident and senior management major at International College in Fort Myers, is the college’s student of the month for July 2001. Roach, 38, office manager at Sports Medicine & Joint Replacement Specialists at Riverwalk in Fort Myers, has a 4.0 grade point average in three academic terms at International since enrolling there in 2000. She has an associate degree from the University of Toledo and also attended the University of South Florida.
She was nominated by Nancey Wyant, International College program chair of management. "Tammy is a dedicated student," Wyant said. "She has arranged her work schedule to take a vacation day every Thursday—the day she attends class. She uses Thursdays to do research in the library to be prepared for class that night. Few people would give up vacation days like that." "It is a sacrifice for me but once I have my bachelor’s degree it will be worth it," Roach said. "I always wanted my bachelor’s. I feel it helps with job security in corporate America. I wanted to have that backing behind me."
She said she chose International College to complete her bachelor’s requirements because of accelerated degree programs and the opportunity to receive college credit for previous work experience.
"It is possible to finish a degree program at International in a reasonable amount of time," she said. "That’s important to an older student."
