A member of the Hodges University faculty since May 2015, Dr. Amber Pope serves as program chair and associate professor in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program. As a licensed mental health counselor and a nationally certified counselor, Pope specializes in couples counseling, sexuality concerns, gender and sexuality development and LGBTQ-related counseling.

Many of her published articles are related to counseling couples and working with LGBTQ clients in The Family Journal, the Journal of LGBT Issues in Counseling and the Journal of Couple and Relationship Therapy. She recently co-authored a book with Sage, Inc. on sexuality counseling. Her experience includes working with transgender individuals and providing support through the transitioning process, as well as conducting cross-sex hormone and gender reassignment surgery assessments. Pope is trained in emotionally focused couples therapy and dialectical behavior therapy. She uses solution-focused, mindfulness training and interpersonal process techniques in her therapy.

In 2012, she was recognized as the Southern Association of Counselor Education & Supervision Emerging Leader Fellow with the University of South Alabama Lisa Mitchell Bukstein Foundation Scholarship for Developing Faculty in Education.

When she isn’t counseling others, she finds her own therapy in running, yoga, traveling, reading historical and science fiction novels, watching North Carolina Tar Heel basketball and being on the water.
